In addition to owning her own business, Susan spent nearly a decade as Managing Director of two nationally based project resources firms. While in these roles, she grew those practices to multi-million dollar entities. Prior to entering project-based professional services, she was a Senior Manager at KPMG LLP where her clients consisted of multi-billion dollar public and private companies within consumer markets, manufacturing and retail entities and employee benefit plans.

Susan has a proven ability to engage and maintain professional relationships with all levels of business leaders and boasts a strong track record in exceptional service and quality talent to clients and associates. Susan earned Bachelors of Science degrees in both accounting and finance from Florida State University and is an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Susan became one of the nations’ first professionals to be named as a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).

As a native of Jacksonville, Susan enjoys being an active member of her community. She currently serves on the Women’s Executive Success Circle, and on the Budget & Finance Committee at her church, is a graduate of Leadership Jacksonville’s Class of 2010 and is a member of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, Florida Institute of Public Accountants and American Institute of Public Accountants.

The Challenge

A local affiliate of an international not for profit organization maintains responsibility to the Board of Trustees for the management and oversight of more than $75 million in pension and welfare benefits. Although they engage a third party independent firm for an annual audit, in 2006 the Board of Trustees decided to introduce an additional level of outside scrutiny to further strengthen member confidence as well as expose the administrative staff to additional financial reporting techniques through an ongoing relationship year around. They knew this would not be an easy role to fill due to the highly technically proficient skill set needed, and they wanted a limited hour basis. Through a long time working relationship Cuthbertson & Associates (C&A) was contacted by a Trustee for engagement. Today, as a result C&A has filled that need month after month for almost a decade.

The Solution

As a result, monthly financials are reviewed by C&A as an independent third party prior to the ‘Board of Trustees’ review. This practice has reduced the overall hours and expense required for the annual audit and strictly adheres to generally accepted accounting practices, which strongly discourage an audit firm who is issuing an opinion letter, from also preparing the work papers utilized in the audit. C&A is not performing a “sign off” or issuing an opinion letter; rather, we assist in compiling financial statements, attend the quarterly Board meetings, participate in the financial reporting discussions, and provide an additional level of confidence that no material changes have occurred within the period of review.

The Challenge

In the spring of 2015, the Director of Internal Audit for a medium sized retailer approached her manager, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and informed him that she was expecting her second child. After the initial excitement and congratulatory moment was over, they had a candid conversation about her duties. She explained that she had every intention of continuing in her career with the company in her current role. Her pregnancy had been deemed by the doctor to be in the high risk category, so it was entirely possible her 12 week leave of absence could begin early and unexpectedly. The CFO decided that it would be a good idea to begin to find someone to temporarily fill the role while she was out on leave.
